The Government setup a Cabinet Committee in 2008 that is chaired by the Prime Minister to identify and monitor the participation of the Indian community in Government projects and programs.
Following this, the Federal Government is now establishing a ‘Special Implementation Taskforce’ reporting to the Cabinet Committee primarily to monitor and strengthen delivery and implementation so that the poor and low-income groups can access public sector services such as poverty eradication programs, affordable housing, educational programs, skills training opportunities, business training and micro credit schemes.
This effort is in line with the PM’s approach of ‘People First, Performance Now’ and will seek to address all execution challenges in delivering social and development programs and projects to the Indian community.
This taskforce will be chaired by the YB Datuk Dr. Subramaniam, the Minister of Human Resources, who is also a member of the Cabinet Committee on Indian affairs. YBhg Tan Sri Datuk G. Gnanalingam, founder and Executive Chairman of Westports Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. and a member of PEMUDAH, will co-Chair this taskforce. Managing the operations and serving as Secretary to this Taskforce is Datuk Dr. Denison Jayasooria, a social policy researcher and activist, from the Institute of Ethnic Studies , University Kebangsaan Malaysia .
The Economic Planning Unit, Implementation and Coordination Unit, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Human Resources and the Prime Minister’s Office as well as all other relevant agencies and ministries will work closely with this Taskforce to achieve timely delivery of programs and projects to the Indian community.
There will be significant opportunities for civil society and NGOs to work with the new Taskforce and play key roles in monitoring implementation particularly through people mobilization and empowerment at the grassroots level. The Taskforce will also organize regular dialogues in order to receive feedback on delivery and towards ensuring that services reach the needy target groups.
